Lion

**I felt like doing a one-shot.
>Characters aren't mine, idea is.
Enjoy.**

Only when he heard people giggling nearby, he became aware of the sudden additional weight resting on his shoulder. Quite at ease, apparently, since it didn't show the slightest inclination to move away, now that he had noticed it and shifted a little, in order to be able to take a closer look.
>It appeared to be quite peaceful, though.
_Since when are you here?_
>Shusei had been so deeply sunk in his book that he, honestly, hadn't noticed.
_Why didn't you tell me? And where from did this sudden self-control come? Usually you can't hold still for even a minute..._ Now it made him smile a little.
>You were just tired, weren't you?
>But there was something warm around his waist, as well.
While his head rested comfortably on Shusei's shoulder, Hotsuma had put one arm firmly around his partner's waist. Holding him and, even though sound asleep, guarding him enviously.
>With his shaggy, coppery hair and draped on the couch like that, he looked like a giant cat. Like a lion that had rolled himself up around what was undoubtedly his. Something he would protect. Something he would defend.
Shusei could feel his partner's firm muscles underneath clothes and golden skin, pressing against his body, ever so slightly. He felt their strength, even in their currently relaxed state. He knew their power. He knew the scars that adorned this body and he knew the secret, sensitive spots. He knew the fierce spirit that inhabited it. He knew and cherished the brave fire that sometimes glowed in those, now closed, eyes. He remembered the growling in his partner's voice when he got angry and the purring in his softest whisper.
>He knew the claws, the hissing and spitting and the roar. He knew the timid- and watchfulness toward strangers. He knew the protectiveness, the curiosity, the playfulness... And he knew the confidence and trust this wild creature had placed in him.
Right now there was something in Hotsuma's posture that would scare any potential enemy – and rival- away instantly.
>Maybe it would have made someone else angry, someone other than Shusei.
He knew, he wasn't a possession to his partner, a thing that could be owned and needed to be kept away from others. That wasn't what he felt like at all, quite the contrary. It was a small gesture, for once revealing the bond they shared, making it visible to everyone around. And it was a proof. Something telling him, he was… No, his life… His life had value. And yes, he was needed, he was loved.
>I bet you didn't waste a thought on it, didn't you? You just did it because you felt like it.
>Hotsuma stirred a little in his sleep.
Shusei carefully took his head into his hands, gently moving it from his shoulder into his lap.
>You amaze me every day anew. Do you know that? He thought, stroking his partner's hair, moving his hand along the outlines of his face, so familiar, caressing his forehead, his cheeks, his lips.
>The great king of cats smiled in his sleep, just like a kitten, happy and contented.
_My,_ Shusei thought, _what a hand-tame lion._
